I love my vege garden… there’s something satisfying in spending time outdoors, caring for my plants.
I also get to eat my hobby! What’s not to love?
Recently I was considering how much time and attention I lavish on my vegetable garden and into my head popped the thought:
“I need to treat myself more like a vegetable”.
I know this sounds really odd, so bear with me while I try to explain:
I always make sure my garden is well watered and the plants do not get dry and wilt, but I don’t always drink the amount of water I should to make sure my body is functioning at it’s best.
When it’s cold, I make sure to plant my veges in a sheltered area of the garden, and cover up some plants with frost cloth if they are tender. On the other hand, I find myself running around being busy, and when I stop I realise I have been freezing cold for the last few hours and haven’t stopped to put a warm layer on.
I make sure my plants are well nourished with compost so they have all they need to grow well and be resistant to pests and diseases. Sometimes my attention to my own nutrition lags behind my attention to garden nutrition!
My vegetable garden needs a certain amount of sunlight per day to perform well, and I am the same - making sure to get outside daily helps my mental and physical health, and sleep.
In the garden, I am reminded that everything has its season, including a time for rest (Winter) and following the natural cycles myself will ensure I have time for rest and recovery as well as growth and activity.
